A marathon or a sprint
I remember being told that life was a marathon. You’re in it for the long run so pace yourself
Then years later I was told if you can’t win the sprint your always gonna get beat, cause some guys can only sprint and they will beat you in the short term. And loads of short terms equals a long term – right??
Well yes it’s right but I recently learned that in reality, life (and especially business) is the same distance as a marathon but it’s ran in a short series of sprints. You just need to be able to go ‘all out’ for a short period of time but keep on keeping on after these sprints.
So you need to be prepared for both.
The book by Loehr Schwartz, The Power of Full Engagement says it best –
We, too, must learn to live our own lives as a series of sprints—fully engaging for periods of time, and then fully disengaging and seeking renewal before jumping back into the fray to face whatever challenges confront us.
– Loehr Schwartz
This book also points out that we usually look at the times people spend renewing their energy as failure when in fact you need to really do this to be able to win the sprints. They will appear shortly after all.
I recommend getting this book and using it (the last part is the part people usually don’t do – use it).
I also recommend having a strategy in place so you can predict when the short sharp sprints will come up, get ready for them and simply run the race – well prepared, well rested and doing the right things.
This is especially true online. You see, technology moves so fast you must make sure you see what’s coming and be ready for it.
Hoping you’re ready for these challenges is not a good strategy.
