As someone who sold complex IT solutions for years and also someone who has been in some senior management positions in large organisations (before I saw some sense), I am used to what I shall call ‘manangement speak’.
I am also used to guys talking in acronyms and quite frankly saying too much to describe one thing or using an abbreviation when they actually should say what they mean. I call that ‘geek speak’ – I’m sure you know what I mean.
Management speak = take ten minutes to say something that could have been said in one (but it does sound impressive – yeah right)
Geek speak = say it in a few letters when you really should explain it fully (but that also impresses you as well – yeah right again)
But there are a few good acronyms kicking around (yet to hear some good management speak tho…)
My favourite acronyms are ROI – yep, good old Return On Investment. Not just regarding money though, I think along the lines of time, effort and money.
Announcing my new favourite – COI
Cost Of Inaction
Pretty good that one, because it does bring home the fact that whatever you decide to work on, the inactivity in other tasks will be costing you. Opportunity cost at it’s best.
I’d also like to add that COI could stand for Cost Of Ignorance.
You see, what you don’t know WILL hurt you and even if you do know something and don’t use it, that’s the same as not knowing in the first place.
So the lesson in this post is simply this:-
1 Keep your language appropriate (it impresses no one that you can gas all day and not actually say anything worthwhile – yes even when you spout off useless management phrases).
2 Keep your language as short or as long as it needs to be.
3 Keep your language appropriate (it impresses no one that you can gas all day and not actually say anything worthwhile – yes even when you spout off useless management phrases).
4 Don’t be ignorant about what is working in the business world, don’t fall foul to COI (the ignorance variety)
Once you do know what to do, don’t fall foul to COI (the inaction variety), remember what they say on a very popular sports shoes adverts – Just Do It.
That way your ROI will always be maintained at an extremely high level – (HELP – even I’m at it now.)
All the best
